Book Nook How-To

Brady and I both love our book nook! When books before bedtime is mentioned every evening Brady responds with "boooh?," a smile and an enthusiastic plop into our cozy corner.

Reading can happen anywhere of course. But, books are special and I think they definitely deserve a special place in the home. By treating our books with respect, giving them a special spot and spending quality time there each day, I hope to be cultivating a love of reading that Brady carries with him as he grows.

Here is a list of components that make for a great book nook!

1. Front-facing bookshelf. Kids are more likely to look at books if they are visually appealing and easy to access. Front-facing shelves also make them easier to put away.

2. Stuffed animals or dolls. Reading with a grown-up is always important. But having stuffed animals or dolls children can read to can encourages them to spend independent time reading as well.

3. Puppets. Act out stories or have the puppet ask questions about the story you just read.

4. Felt board. This is another fun way to re-tell stories. Recalling events is an important skill for literacy development.

You can see the small framed felt board in this picture. So simple and perfect for little hands!

5. Pillows and lighting. Personalize the space with comfy items. A warm, cozy space is inviting for little readers.

I hope you'll feel inspired to create a special space in your home to help raise a reader.
Stay tuned for a future post with tips for reading aloud!
